One of the more inventive mods has you playing as the Barbarians, with your objective being to destroy Civilization itself. Galactic civilization 2 have Babylon 5, Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, warhammer mods, and master of Orion. It does span the stone age up until the modern age and beyond (the game ends in the year 2050), although you can end the game in many ways (through focusing on culture, military, technology and research, or diplomacy) depending on your long term strategy - this itself depends on which civilizations you choose, as you start off with different technologies, and as later versions of the game have proven, each civilization is geared towards a certain type of gameplay though you may play it as you wish: as the Mongols I played to crush allcomers, while as the Germans I played to out-produce everyone and gain several technologies, for instance.Ĭiv4 is highly moddable, and there have been numerous fan-based mods (some of the better ones of which have also appeared with the official expansions) where you can recreate specific world conflicts, play in different settings (including a future world, a fantasy world, and outer space itself) etc. In the basic game (the game itself is far from basic ) you guide a small tribe towards building cities, farms, military units, and discovering new technologies along the way, eventually creating a large country among other rival civilizations, involving trade, war, diplomacy, etc.

Click to expand. It's essentially a good old fashioned civilization simulator.
